How to Use a Smoker, the Heated Debate!

When asked how to use a smoker and what kind of smoker to use, it is not difficult to end up in a heated debate (pun intended!)

Smokers are available in a wide variety of options. Most people are familiar with the standard BBQ pits, grills, and smokers for use with charcoal or wood, but you can even find an electric smoker which has the added advantage that you don’t have to keep the fire burning!  Basically you just set the temperature dial and you are good to go for the long run!

No matter what kind of smoker you use, you will always need to provide some BBQ wood for the smoky flavor.  The type BBQ smoker wood you use will depend on the type of meat you are cooking. Certain wood works better with certain barbecued meats.

Many times the BBQ chef just uses whatever type of wood that is handy or easiest to find, but this is a big mistake.  Usually there are one or two types of wood available in the local supermarket. That is because other types of barbecue wood might not be as readily available in that particular area.

If you will learn to keep your eye out for different barbecue wood types, you will be surprised at the many opportunities to pick some up…at little or no cost. And the difference it will make to the taste of your barbeque will be that much better.

Just about any type of wood can be used for barbecue except pine and cedar. Fruit tree wood is an all time favorite because of the sweet flavor that it gives certain meats.

The bottom line is that a meat smokers is a terrific way to enjoy BBQ food.  Once you learn how to use a smoker, you won’t be disappointed!
